A Practical Guide to Selecting and Customizing LED Drivers

The Role of LED Power Supplies

Many people assume that a switching power supply simply converts 220V (or 110V) mains power into 12V or 24V—as long as the lights come on, that’s all that matters. This is far from the truth. A high-quality power supply performs three critical functions:

Providing a stable current. LEDs are current-driven devices; even the slightest voltage fluctuation can cause drastic changes in current, leading to thermal runaway and the destruction of the LED chips within seconds.

Filtering out “grid pollution.” Voltage spikes caused by lightning strikes or the startup of high-power equipment can instantly damage the LED chip. A well-designed power supply incorporates multi-stage EMI filtering and surge protection circuits to keep these hazards at bay.

Eliminate invisible flicker. Cheap power supplies output DC current mixed with high levels of AC ripple, creating flicker that is imperceptible to the naked eye but still detected by the brain. Prolonged exposure to this lighting environment can cause headaches and vision deterioration. A high-quality driver power supply provides clean, stable light.

Plastic case or aluminum case

You have undoubtedly noticed two major categories of products on the market: plastic-cased power supplies—typified by the LPV series—and aluminum-cased power supplies—typified by the LDV series. These are not simply a matter of "good" versus "better"; rather, they are engineered for entirely different application scenarios.

Plastic-cased power supplies are lightweight, and their housing serves as an insulator in its own right (offering Class II protection, meaning grounding is typically not required). They offer excellent value for money and are ideally suited for indoor, low-to-medium power applications—such as commercial display cases, integrated furniture lighting, office cove lighting strips, and hotel guest rooms. However, their heat dissipation relies on natural convection; if forced into a confined space and subjected to heavy loads over extended periods, their operational lifespan will be significantly compromised.

Aluminum-cased power supplies possess thermal conductivity hundreds of times greater than that of plastic, enabling them to rapidly channel internal heat to the metal housing's surface for dissipation. This makes them perfectly suited for high-power applications, fully enclosed lighting fixtures, and harsh environments—including outdoor architectural lighting, wall washers, floodlights, roadway lighting, industrial equipment, and plant factories. Yes, the unit cost is slightly higher; however, their exceptional reliability translates into savings on future labor and material costs associated with climbing ladders to replace power supplies—a financial calculation that undoubtedly makes sound economic sense.

Comprehensive Customization Services: From Standard Products to Tailored Solutions

Custom Parameters: Extensive real-world testing has shown that switching power supplies operate with the highest efficiency, lowest temperature rise, and longest lifespan when running at 50% to 80% of their rated power. Therefore, if your actual load is 76W, we won’t simply hand you a standard 100W unit to make up the difference. Instead, we’ll adjust the output settings so that the power supply operates precisely within that optimal range, maximizing both efficiency and lifespan.

Custom Cable Length and Connectors: Cable lengths can be precisely customized to fit your cabinet dimensions or light pole interfaces. Waterproof connectors or DC terminals of your specified specifications are pre-installed before shipment. On-site installers don’t need to strip wires or wrap them with electrical tape—simply plug in to power up. This not only significantly reduces installation time but also eliminates the risk of heat generation from contact resistance and water ingress caused by poor on-site wiring at the source.

OEM: We support direct laser engraving of your logo, model number, and certification marks onto the housing and labels. When your customers open the access panel and see a power supply bearing a unified brand identity, their confidence in the overall quality of the luminaire immediately rises to a new level. For OEMs pursuing brand development, this is one of the most cost-effective and long-lasting investments available.
